Essays: Equality

Equality is a word that gets tossed around a lot these days. Women want equality with men, boys want equality with girls, gays want equality with married couples - it never seems to end. The fact is I doubt True Equality exists.

For the world to be equal, everything about us would have to be equal:
- All of us the same height, weight and skin color,

- All of us would have to have the exact same intellectual abilities and
- All of us would have access to the same economic benefits.

To really make this work, you could still have sexual dimorphism (two genders), however, other than which form carries the child, all other physical capabilities would have to be equal. Then the world would have True Equality.

It would also be very boring.

It's the diversity of life that makes life interesting for all of us. Think of how ordinary basketball would be if everyone could play like Michael Jordan. Would you bother to watch baseball if everyone had a .500 batting average?

I'm taller than average for an African American male. I have abilities that come from being my race, nationality and gender that make me different from the majority of people in the world. Not necessarily better, I'm just different.

Under certain circumstances, I have advantages over competing males; taller or stronger. But under different circumstances, these are liabilities.

A few years ago, I went to an amusement park with my niece, nephew and their friends. I wasn't able to ride the SUPERMAN roller coaster because I couldn't fit into the cage!

There are times when it's good to be able to reach high up, but there are also times when it's good to be able to squeeze into small places.

The point is all men are not created equal. But True Equality wasn't the point of the Constitution in the first place. What the originators of that document were saying was that "all men should be CONSIDERED equal" in the eyes of the law and in terms of opportunity.

No law can make you my height if nature gave you a different frame. No law can make a man a woman or vice versa. All the law can do is ensure that each of us has an equal opportunity to succeed or fail on our own merits.

We should have the freedom to explore our natural gifts and limitations without artificial barriers based on arbitrary factors such as gender or skin color. In the end, that is all the equality we need.
